A scalar has magnitude, but no direction. A vector has magnitude and direction. They both had magnitude (velocity).

A vector has magnitude and direction. A scalar has magnitude with no direction. They are fairly similar but somewhat different.

Scalar is a velocity without direction, just with magnitude. Vector has both, the direction and magnitude.
